About the Artist
Nicholas Mathios, an American painter of Greek heritage, has actively pursued the Fine Arts after a successful career as a graphic artist and consultant. He specializes in acrylic paintings on canvas centering on New England, Florida and Greece.
Moving to Florida from New Hampshire in the nineties, Mathios chose as his first subject the rendition of Greek village scenes in Tarpon Springs depicting Greek dancing, sponge fishing boats and Greek festivals. This series of twelve paintings were reproduced in a collection of colorful note cards. These note cards are currently available from the St. Nicholas Bookstore, Tarpon Springs and the Leeper Ratner Museum of Art store, St. Petersburg College, Tarpon Springs campus. Some of the original paintings are still available as are limited edition prints. Please contact us for more information.
Born and raised in New England, Mathios has a deep affection for the rugged land and seacoast. He employs a heavy impasto to capture the rugged dramatic coastline of the boulder strewn Maine coast. In contrast to the usual dark foreboding colors, there are vibrant hues that offer a completely different view of Maine coast and forest.
Another favorite subject for Mathios is New England barns and older homes which may now be abandoned. “They provide so much character and drama,” says Mathios, “I can never pass up the opportunity to sketch and record the buildings that I discover.”
Historic Fanueil Hall provides the inspiration for several scenes of Boston. The restored marketplace appeals to scores of sightseers and shoppers. Outdoor stands offer fruits, vegetables and other fare in the heart of Boston and this is the essence captured in these vibrant scenes. Hand Embellished Limited Edition prints only, are available in this category.
In several trips to Greece, the painter has visited seventeen of the islands, including Chios, Samos, Santorini, Mykonos and
others. Relating to his Greek background, he offers a colorful variety
of subjects presented with bold strokes, vividly capturing the essence
of the Hellenic experience.
