About the Westport Island Collection
During the period of August 2nd to September 12, 2002, Nicholas Mathios was privileged to be chosen for a residency at the MacNamara Foundation Studios in Westport Island, Maine. The residency program is awarded to selected professional artists for a period of six weeks.
Mathios found the program particularly energizing and was able to produce a large number of acrylic landscape and seascape paintings. During this time he adopted a mantra from the poet Rumi “concentrate on the essence, concentrate on the light”.
The work portrayed here reflects that goal in a vivid manner, capturing
the island’s character
in the brilliant light of summer. For the first time the
artist was also drawn to paint flowers in his usual dramatic technique.
Some of the original works are still available, please ask for availability and prices.
Acrylic paintings from the Westport Island collection are available as prints in the following paper or canvas sizes: 8 1/2 x 11, 11 x 14, 16 x 20, 18 x 24, 24 x 36, and note cards
Please note, the image size of prints will slightly
vary according to the proportions of the original art work.
